He was adopted as child by Ota Hidetsuna and was later brought to Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and allowed to use the name “Toyotomi”. He served in the Kyushu Campaign and was afterwards given a large fief in Chikugo at Kurume. During the Sekigahara Campaign he commanded troops for the 'western army' and fought under Tachibaba Muneshige at Ôtsu castle.
