Shantou is a port in China's [[Guangdong province]], also historically known in many Western references as "Swatow," deriving from an early modern Dutch transliteration of the city's name. A number of arts and styles associated with the city, including [[Swatow wares]] ceramics (actually produced in [[Fujian province]]), and a style of fan known as the Swatow fan, are thus named in such a fashion.
