Kanbun 3 (寛文三年)

The first Chinese investiture envoys since the fall of the Ming Dynasty arrive in Ryûkyû. The king of Ryûkyû, and his officials, are granted permission to maintain Ming ceremonial costume; they are not obligated to adopt Qing costume. The post of ukwanshin bugyô (Magistrate of Receiving Investiture Envoys) is established.
Dutch East India Company trading post in Ayutthaya is closed.
The nails and brackets of the wooden Kyôto Daibutsu of Hôkô-ji are melted down, yielding 40 million kammon worth of metal.
