Mary Griggs Burke was a significant American collector of Japanese art. In 1985, the collection she amassed with her husband Jackson Burke ([[1908]]-1975) became the first overseas private collection to be shown in a major exhibition at the [[Tokyo National Museum]]. It has been described as "the finest and most encompassing private collection of Japanese art outside Japan."<ref>Gallery label, "Celebrating the Arts of Japan: The Mary Griggs Burke Collection," Metropolitan Museum, 18 Dec 2015.[https://www.flickr.com/photos/toranosuke/28187439535/sizes/h/]</ref>
Following Griggs Burke's death in 2012, some three hundred works from her collection (including a number of Korean objects as well) were donated to the [[Metropolitan Museum of Art]] in New York.
