Tani Sanjurô was a Bitchu Matsuyama han samurai. His kenjutsu style was Jikishin Ryu and Shin-Kage Ryu. It's unknown when he joined the Shinsengumi, however his name was on the list of the Ikedaya bonus conferment. While he was stationed in Osaka with his brother Tani Mantarô, they raided the Zenzaiya in 1865. In 1866, he was found dead near the Yasaka shrine in Kyoto. His grave is in the Koen-ji.

His youngest brother Tani Shuhei was temporarily adopted by Kondo Isami.
