Matsudaira Tadaatsu was one of the first Japanese to graduate from Harvard University, doing so in 1879.
Brother to Matsudaira Tadanari, the last daimyô of Ueda domain, Tadaatsu attended Harvard University, and after graduating, married an American woman, Carrie Sampson, the daughter of a bookshop owner. He later became the city engineer for Bradford, Pennsylvania, and inspector of mines for the State of Colorado.
