Aoyama Tadamasa was the first to be appointed ''[[machi bugyo|Edo machi bugyô]]'' (Edo Magistrate) for the [[Tokugawa shogunate]]. He was appointed to that position in [[1601]], and simultaneously to the position of magistrate overseeing the entire [[Kanto|Kantô]] region.
