*Japanese/Chinese: 蓬莱山 (hourai san / pénglái shān)
Mt. Hôrai, known as Pénglái-shān in Chinese, is a mythical mountain island paradise believed to lie out to the east (i.e. in the East China Sea). Strongly associated with longevity or immortality, the island was inaccessible to mortals, but could be accessed by Daoist masters who flew there on the back of cranes. Paintings of the island often also feature turtles and pine trees, symbols of longevity.
