  • 1893/1/17 The Kingdom of Hawaii is overthrown in a coup led by a group of American businessmen.
  • 1893/5/1 World's Columbian Exposition, at which Japan exhibits, opens in Chicago.
    • The Japanese pavilion is patterned architecturally after the Byôdôin; Japanese painting is for the first time shown in the Palace of Fine Arts, where at previous World's Fairs, it was shown in the industrial crafts halls.
  • 1893/7/11 Technique for artificially culturing pearls is developed by Mikimoto Kôkichi.
