- 866/int. 3 Ôtemmon Incident - Main gate of Kyoto Gosho is burned.
- 866/7 Tendai founder Saichô and Tendai priest Ennin are posthumously named Dengyô Daishi and Jikaku Daishi respectively. This marks the first use of the honorary name/title "Daishi".
- 866/8 Fujiwara no Yoshifusa becomes Sesshô, beginning a tradition of Fujiwara clan regents.
