Tsuchiya Tadanao was the son of Tsuchiya Masatsune, and a retainer of the Takeda clan. He married a daughter of Okabe Tamba-no-kami. Tadanao died in battle alongside Takeda Katsuyori in 1582. His second son, Tsuchiya Katsutane, married a daughter of the Sôma clan and was adopted into the family, becoming Sôma Tadatane and head of the Sôma.
