Tenmon gata was a post under the Tokugawa shogunate charged with calendar revision and related academic and scientific obligations. The post was established in 1684, with Shibukawa Harumi as the first office holder.

In 1811, tenmon gata Takahashi Kageyasu became the head of the newly-established Bansho Wage Goyô, an office in charge of producing translations of foreign books.
