Sadayakko is often regarded as Japan's first modern actress.

As a child, Sadayakko was educated in reading & writing, judo, and horseback riding. She later became a mistress to Prime Minister Itô Hirobumi, before marrying actor & theatre troupe leader Kawakami Otojirô, with whom she toured the United States.
