Mary Griggs Burke

  • Born: 1916
  • Died: 2012

Mary Griggs Burke was a significant American collector of Japanese art. In 1985, the collection she amassed with her husband Jackson Burke (1908-1975) became the first overseas private collection to be shown in a major exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum. It has been described as "the finest and most encompassing private collection of Japanese art outside Japan."[1]

Following Griggs Burke's death in 2012, some three hundred works from her collection (including a number of Korean objects as well) were donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
