Hidekane was the 9th and last son of Môri Motonari (and one of seven to reach adulthood). He was adopted as child by Ota Hidetsuna and was later brought to Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and allowed to use the name “Toyotomi”. He served in the Kyushu Campaign and was afterwards given a large fief in Chikugo at Kurume. During the Sekigahara Campaign he commanded troops for the 'western army' and fought under Tachibana Muneshige at Ôtsu castle. After the battle he was deprived of his Chikugo holdings and was given a small fief in Nagato province.
