  • 1893/1/17 The Kingdom of Hawaii is overthrown in a coup led by a group of American businessmen.
  • 1893/5/1 World's Columbian Exposition, at which Japan exhibits, opens in Chicago.
    • The Japanese pavilion is patterned architecturally after the Byôdôin; Japanese painting is for the first time shown in the Palace of Fine Arts, where at previous World's Fairs, it was shown in the industrial crafts halls.
  • 1893/7/11 Technique for artificially culturing pearls is developed by Mikimoto Kôkichi.
  • 1893/10/30 World's Columbian Exposition closes.

  • A Japanese League is formed in Honolulu which presses for suffrage to be restored to the Japanese in Hawaii.
  • Katsushika Hokusai den, the first biography of Hokusai, is published. It is written by Iijima Kyôshin (1841-1901).
  • Kimigayo is composed.
  • Kuroda Seiki returns to Japan from Europe.
  • Representatives of the people of the Miyako Islands speak before the Diet, petitioning for the abolition of the poll tax, and for political representation.
  • Police in the Miyako and Yaeyama Islands, mostly individuals originally from Kagoshima prefecture, who had controlled civil affairs since 1879, turn over such matters to civil authorities.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, hosts the second ever museum exhibition of work by Hokusai (and the first in the US).
  • Nagai Nagayoshi becomes the first man to synthesize methamphetamine.
  • The navy cruiser Naniwa, under the command of Tôgô Heihachirô, stations itself in Honolulu harbor for several months, ostensibly to protect Japanese in the islands during the turmoil created by the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom; the cruiser also serves as a show of force in the international dispute over sovereignty or independence of the islands.
  • Ryûkyû Shimpô, the first newspaper in Okinawa, is founded.
