Shinsengumi
Saitô Hajime was born as a son of Gokenin in Edo.
He killed a Hatamoto when he was around 18 and he had to flee Edo.
He joined the Mibu Roshigumi in Kyoto in 1863.
In 1865, he became captain of the 3rd unit of the Shinsengumi.
When Itô Kashitarô's group formed the Goryô Eji, Saito joined them as a spy and discovered their plan of assassination of Kondô Isami which resulted in Ito Kashitaro's assassination by the Shinsengumi (Incident at Aburano Koji).

Boshin War
He participated in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, and the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma.
Then he went to Aizu with several members.
(Kondô Isami and other members went to Nagareyama)
He was named the commander of the Shinsengumi instead of Hijikata Toshizo who was wounded.
After they lost the Battle of Bonari pass, Hijikata decided to
go north to join Enomoto Takeaki's Bakufu troops.
According to Saitô Hajime's grandson, Saito said "The Shinsengumi has benefitted greatly from Lord Matsudaira Katamori.
I refuse to leave Aizu. I will die with them rather than leave."
Saitô and around 20 other members stayed in Aizu and held a siege in Nyoraidô, but were defeated.
In September, 1868, Aizu surrendered.
Aizu samurai and families were expeled to Tonami.

Meiji
Saito married Takagi Tokio in Tonami, sponsered by former Lord Matsudaira Katamori, the former Aizu han Karô Yamakawa Hiroshi and Sagawa Kanbei. (Saito had a prior marriage with Shinoda Yaso but details are unknown)
Saito was given the new name Fujita Goro by Matsudaira Katamori.
Later they moved to Tokyo, where Goro was hired by the Police department (1872).
In 1877, he was sent to Kyushu (Seinan War) as a member of the Battô tai with many other former Aizu han samurai. It was compared to a "revenge" of the Boshin war.
In 1891,he retired from the Police and worked at schools until 1909.
In 1915 he died of stomach ulcer.

According to Fujita Goro's grandchild Fujita Minoru, sometimes Goro was assaulted by strangers who seemed to be the surviving members of the Goryo Eji after the Meiji restoration.
Unlike Nagakura Shinpachi, Goro didn't talk about the Shinsengumi very much.

Kenjutsu
Saito is believed to have learned Mugai Ryu and Itto Ryu.

Saito Hajime's Sword
(His full name was Serizawa Kamo Taira no Mitsumoto.)
Other names: Serizawa Mitsumoto, Shimomura Tsuguji, Taira no Mitsumoto.

:I think that until we get some sort of consensus on it, that's how we should do it. --Kitsuno 10:31, 7 February 2007 (PST)

::For the time being, I think that we should leave "other names" out instead.

::Other than Serizawa's full name, he could be referred as "Serizawa Kamo" or "Serizawa Kamo Mitsumoto". In writing, he was sometimes referred as "Taira no Mitsumoto" (formal name used in writing) or "Serizawa Mitsumoto" (like the "initials" for his full name.) Seven 23:38, 8 February 2007 (PST)

:Well, those are "other names he was known by/referred to as", so it seems to fit the idea of another name. I'm not sure what the contention is here. It seems to fit there at least temporarily until we find some sort of consensus. If we knew what that type of name was called, we could add an additional line for it. I eventually want to list everyone's names under the correct title (imina, nanori, etc), but for now, until I sort that all out I've just been putting it under "other names". --Kitsuno 00:38, 9 February 2007 (PST)

::My point is that neither "Taira no Mitsumoto" or "Serizawa Mitsumoto" is like "Shimomura Tsuguji" at all. It's not a good idea to list them together under "other names" (in my opinion.) ==Mito==
The Serizawa family were Gôshi of Seizawa village in Hitachi province.
Serizawa Mistumoto was adopted into the Shimomura family and his name was changed to Shimomura Tsuguji.
Tsuguji was jailed for involvement in the "Tamatsukurigumi" which was a SonnôJôi group in Mito han, however he was released in 1862 and then he changed name to "Serizawa Kamo".
Mibu Rôshigumi
Serizawa joined the Rôshigumi in Edo in 1864 and moved to Kyoto.
He and Kondô Isami protested against Kiyokawa Hachirô and decided to stay in Kyoto.
The 24 Ronin who stayed in Kyoto called themselves the Mibu Rôshigumi and they were employed by Aizu han.
However, Serizawa's violent acts became a big problem in Kyoto, so Aizu han secretly ordered Kondo to assassinate Serizawa.
In 1863, Hijikata Toshizô, Okita Sôji, Harada Sanosuke, and Yamanami Keisuke stormed into Yagi Gennojô's house and killed Serizawa and Hirayama Gorô. (There are alternative theories regarding the people involved in Serizawa's assassination.) Their graves are in Mibu temple Kyoto.
Plans to edit sections 1-3 of the Shinsengumi page
All, on Saturday afternoon (Jan 28), while killing time at Narita before my flight, I plan to start editing sections 1-3 of the Shinsengumi page. My edits will not do anything to the excellent information that has been posted unless I find issue with anything. I intend to add a little stylistic flair to the prose. While my Obenjo persona clowns around quite a bit on the forum, I assure alll taht there will be a no-nonsense approach to my contributions as I view the SA Wiki as a serious academic under-taking that reflects on all of us.

I plan to have my first round of edits completed on Sunday (Jan 29) as I will basically have a free day. If I do add any new factual data or make any edits to the excellent factual details that have already been posted, a list of these changes will be summarized in the change box.

Please keep an eye on the Shinsengumi page and give me CONSTRUCTIVE feedback.

Thanks,
Formal name
This issue is not only Shinsengumi category. Seven just added full name on Serizawa Kamo. I would like to say it's formal name.(If any better translation please post here)
The name as a court noble.(朝臣としての正式な名のり)
*From Serizawa Kamo"(His full name was Serizawa Kamo Taira no Mitsumoto.) "
*From J-wiki:「
The formal names are usually "Taira no something" "Fujiwara no something" "Minamoto no something".
For example, Oda Nobunaga's formal name was Taira no Nobunaga.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was Fujiwara no Ieyasu but he changed to Minamoto no Ieyasu later.
But as we know, the names were rarely used on historical records and history books.
So I have avoided to add the names.
If we decide to add the names, small change may be needed to The official biography format.
* Born:
* Died:
* Titles:
* Childhood Name: Kipposhi
* Formal Name
* Japanese:

::I know that the formal names are usually "Taira no something", "Fujiwara no something", "Minamoto no something"...etc. Serizawa Kamo's formal name was Taira no Mitsumoto and his full name was Serizawa Kamo Taira no Mitsumoto. Since some people get confused and mistake Taira no Mitsumoto for his former name or his alias, I've added his full name. Seven 20:12, 1 February 2007 (PST)

:If the "Formal name" is listed as such (and it was uncommon to call someone Serizawa Kamo Taira no Mitsumoto") than it probably should go in the data section on the top. Japanese naming conventions are just plain outright confusing with childhood names, adult names, buddhist names, this name, that name, so I don't think there is any reason to treat the formal name any differently (i.e. put it in a "formal name" section in the top data section.) We've been using the "other names" as a catch all, but eventually I want to seperate out the different types of other names and list them individually on the data section, so this is a good way to start that. Basically, like the dates and uruu month issue, we'll just need an article and/or a link to explain it. Keeping everything standard and having links to explanations are better than trying to explain something in every article. So I think we should treat it the way we do the uruu months, just put them in as "usual", and when we get an article/description for the concept of "formal names", I'll link "formal name" to the applicable article. Seems the best way to handle it to me. --Kitsuno 20:28, 1 February 2007 (PST)

We may need a page for "Names" to explain all those names. Anyway, I am going to post this to S-A forum to let everybody know.--Shikisoku 21:46, 1 February 2007 (PST)

:We do need a page - I think Bethetsu is working one up - she's the expert on the various names. --Kitsuno 21:52, 1 February 2007 (PST)

==Mito==
(His full name was Serizawa Kamo Taira no Mitsumoto.)

Shieikan
Okita Sôji was born the son of a lower Shirakawa han Samurai. He was raised by his oldest sister Mitsu and her husband after his father died.
When he was around 10, he became pupil of Kondo Shusuke's Shieikan, the Tennen Rishin Ryu dojo.
One of the famous episodes of this Kenjutsu genius is when he was just 12, he defeated a Kenjutsu teacher of Shirakawa han.
Sôji became head coach of Shieikan when he was around 19.

1863, he joined Rôshigumi along with other Shieikan members.

Shinsengumi
Sôji was involved in the assassination of Tonouchi Yoshio and Serizawa Kamo.
During the Ikedaya Affair, he was one of 4 members who raided the inside of the Ikedaya.
During the 2 hour battle, Sôji fought on the 2nd floor almost alone but
fell down unconscious because of either Anemia or heat.
(Recent research indicates that this was not a symptom of tuberculosis)
Many people who witnessed the Shinsengumi in action described Sôji as
one of the best Swordman in the Shinsengumi.
On the other hand, Yagi Tamesaburo told Shimozawa Kan in early Showa period "Soji was always joking" and, "He used to play with neighboring children."

Tuberculosis
Soji became seriously ill in fall of 1867.
He stayed at Osaka castle with the wounded Kondo Isami during the
Battle of Toba-Fushimi in January 1868.
In March, he visited Sato Hikogoro in Hino as a member of the Koyo Chinbutai
but had to return to Edo because of his illness.
He died 2 months after Kondo's death.
His grave is in Keisho-ji, Tokyo.
(Keisho-ji allows visitors for Soji's grave only once a year)

The Shinsengumi was a special police force in Kyoto, which was organized by the Bakufu during the Bakumatsu period .

Roshigumi
In 1863, the Bakufu recruited Ronin to guard the Shogun Iemochi on the occasion of a visit to Kyoto.
It was planned by Kiyokawa Hachiro of Shonai han.
Around 200 Ronin formed the Roshigumi,
they headed to Kyoto in Feburuary 1863.
The supervisors were Matsudaira Chikaranosuke, Udono Kyuo, Kubota Shigekatsu, Yamaoka Tesshu, Nakajo Kinnosuke, Sasaki Tadasaburo.
Right after they arrived at Kyoto, Kiyokawa's conspiracy was revealed.
The Roshigumi decided to return Edo except Kondo Isami's Shieikan
and Serizawa Kamo's Mito group.
Some other members also remained with them in Mibu village, Kyoto.
In March, They named Mibu Roshigumi.
The Mibu Roshigumi was hired by Aizu han the Military Commissioner of Kyoto
In August, they were dispatched for the Political change on August 18.
Lord Matsudaura Katamori evaluated their job and gave them new name Shinsengumi.
(Some sources say the name was given by Buku Denso)

Shinsengumi
September 1863, Shieikan group purged Mito group to control over Shinsengumi.
In 1864 Shinsengumi raided Ikedaya where Sonjo Roshi
were planning to burn Kyoto.
After following Kinmon rebellion , Shinsengumi recruited more than 200 new members
with the prize money given by the Imperial court, Bakufu and Aizu han.

The new members included Ito Kashitaro group who Kondo recruited in Edo.
The Shinsengumi headquarter moved to Nishi Hongan-ji from Mibu.
1867 shortly after Shinsengumi were officialy hired as Bakushin ,
Ito Kashitaro group were separated and formed Goryo Eji.
They were assassinated.(Incident at Aburano Koji)

Boshin War
January 1868 , Boshin war was started with
the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and both Inoue Genzaburo and Yamazaki Susumu were killed.
Shinsengumi and other Bakufu troops flighted to Edo with battleship Fujisan Maru .
Shinsengumi was reorganized to Koyo Chinbutai.
The Koyo Chinbutai headed to take over Kofu castle, but lost the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma.
When they returned to Edo, Nagakura Shinpachi and Harada Sanosuke
left the Koyo Chinbutai and formed Seikyotai.
Kondo was captured in Nagareyama three weeks later and executed at Itabashi. Harada died from injuries received during the Battle of Ueno. Two weeks later, Okita Soji died of Tuberculosis.
Hijikata Toshizo was wounded at the Battle of Utsunomiya castle,
Saito Hajime then became the commander of the Aizu Shinsengumi during the Battle of Aizu and he decided to remain with the Aizu samurai when Hijikata decided to go to Hakodate.
In May 1869 Hijikata was shot and killed at the Battle of Hakodate and the last Shinsengumi commander Soma Kazue surrendered.
He was exiled to Niijima island later.
Regulations
The Shinsengumi Regulations (Kyokuchu Hatto) were established
to control the members.
The regulations were first used to purge Serizawa's Mito group.

#Deviating from Bushido.
#Leaving the Shinsengumi.
#Raising money privately.
#Taking part in litigations.
#Engaging in private fights.
#Anybody who breaks the rules will be ordered to commit seppuku.

Uniform
The famous blue Haori was designed from Chushingura.
The pale blue color Asagi was known as the color of seppuku Kamishimo.
But this Haori was used only for a year.
Not page references, basically if you add info, we want to get sources - for example wikipedia, which hardly ever cites its sources, is a pile of useless crap, so I want to make this stand far above the generally horrible wicrapedia. Basically, all that means is just put the book you get the info from in the "references" section on any given article. The "research books" section is just that, a list of research books, but they have nothing to do with the writing of the article - the "references" section does. So just add whatever book(s) you use to the references section when you add info. Quick and easy and keeps this better than Wicrapedia - it keeps it verifiable and useful. Obviously if you are just cleaning up a draft or whatever, you don't need to list a source. --Kitsuno 20:39, 12 January 2007 (PST)
Sevenhttp://samurai-archives.com/w/index.php?title=Talk:Okita_Soji&diff=9837Talk:Okita Soji2007-01-17T06:25:24Z
Seven: /* Photo */ the source of the photograph

:It's good to have someone who has a solid grap of editing a wiki! Everything is pretty much the same as wikipedia with the exception that we try to cite all our sources to set us apart from them, and that we are far, far more strict on what goes up out of necessity in order to keep this a useful historical resource that can be referred to for further research. I tend to delete many things that WP would blithely leave up. Also, the articles tagged as a "draft" basically need a going-over for grammar and readability, so feel free to fix those up as you come across them. Todo Heisuke claimed to be the illegitimate child of Todo Takayuki of Tsu han, Ise, but the truth is unclear.
He learned Hokushin Itto Ryu in Edo where he met Kondo Isami.
His forehead was injured during the Ikedaya incident.
In late 1864, he recruited Ito Kashitaro and his pupils in Edo.
When he returned to Kyoto in 1865, he was shocked that
Yamanami Keisuke had comitted Seppuku which might have effected Todo's decision to leave the Shinsengumi.
In 1867, Ito Kashitaro formed Goryo Eji and Todo joined.
They were assassinated in November (Incident at Aburano Koji). Kondo had wished to spare Todo's life. However, Todo was killed by a new member, Miura
Tsunesaburo, whom did not know the circumstances.

Born in 1854, Ichimura Tetsunosuke was the third son of Ichimura Hanemoki, a samurai from Ogaki-han. Ichimura Tetsunosuke joined the Shinsengumi with his older brother Ichimura Tatsunosuke in 1867.
After the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma, Tatsunosuke deserted from the Koyo Chinbutai (the renamed Shinsengumi) but Tetsunosuke stayed.
During the Battle of Hakodate, Hijikata Toshizo ordered Tetsunosuke to escape from there and take his photograph, hair and death poem to Sato Hikogoro in Hino.
About 2 months after Hijikata's death, Tetsunosuke arrived at Sato's house and stayed there for 3 years.
Then he returned to his home in Ogaki.

There are a few theories in regard of Ichimura Tetsunosuke's death date, while many believe that Ichimura joined Saigo Takamori's army and died during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, some believe that he died from an illness in 1873. In conclusion, the date of his death is uncertain.
The Shinsengumi was a special police force in Kyoto, which was organized by the Bakufu during the Bakumatsu period .

Roshigumi
In 1862, the Bakufu recruited Ronin to guard the Shogun Iemochi on the occasion of a visit to Kyoto.

*Hi Seven! I'm glad finally you came here!--Shikisoku 16:27, 12 January 2007 (PST)

Thanks for the help! --Kitsuno 22:26, 12 January 2007 (PST)
::I know where you're coming from. * Japanese:市村鉄之助 (Ichimura Tetsunosuke)

Born in 1854, Ichimura Tetsunosuke was the third son of Ichimura Hanemoki, a samurai from Ogaki-han. Ichimura Tetsunosuke joined the Shinsengumi with older brother Ichimura Tatsunosuke in 1867.
After the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma, Tatsunosuke deserted from the Shinsengumi but Tetsunosuke stayed.

Takeda Kanryûsai joined the Shinsengumi in 1863. In 1864, He captured Furutaka Shuntaro which led to the Ikedaya Affair.
Kondo Isami treated particularly well because he was an expert of Koshu Ryu Gungaku (the Takeda clan's military science). However, Kanryûsai was disliked by other members and perceived as a flatterer.
Later, the Shinsengumi adopted a more Western military style and Koshu Ryu Gungaku was no longer needed.

He lost his position in the Shinsengumi and contacted Satsuma, which was discovered by Hijikata Toshizo.
In 1867, his request of leaving the Shinsengumi was admitted and
Kondo Isami held farewell party for him.
After the party, it is believed that Takeda was assassinated by Saito Hajime on the way to the Satsuma han residence. (There is an alternative theory that someone else assassinated Takeda.)
Takeda's comrade Katô Higuma was later ordered to commit Seppuku, possibly due to Kanryûsai's prior actions.
Mito
Suzuki Okura was born in Hitachi as a son of Shizuku han Samurai. His family was expeled from the han when he was little.
Okura left from family same time and moved to Mito to study which strongly effected him to be Sonno.
Later he moved to Edo, became pupil of Ito Seiichiro dojo of Hokushin Itto Ryu.
He married to dojo master's daughter and inherited the dojo.
(His name changed to Ito Okura)

Shinsengumi
In 1864, he joined Shinsengumi with Shinohara Tainoshin,Kano Washio,
Hattori Takeo.Utsumi Jiro,Nakajima Nobori,Sano Shimenosuke
, and his brother Suzuki Mikisaburo.
Okura changed his name to Ito Kashitaro

Kondo Isami adored his intelligence and treated him as executive officer in the begining.
But they had opposite political philosophies.
Kondo was Sabaku, Ito was Tobaku.

Goryo Eji
In 1867 shortly after Emperor Komei died, Ito Kashitaro group separated from Shinsengumi and formed Goryo Eji. Goryo Eji means "Guards of Emperor's tomb".
They moved to Zenryu-ji, later moved to Kodai-ji.
They became under the protection of Satsuma han secretly. On November 18 (12/13/1867), Kondo invited Ito to his resident in Samegai.
Ito was assassinated by Shinsengumi members on the way to Kodai-ji at the night.
The Goryo Eji members who came to pick up his body were also attacked.
Shieikan
Okita Soji was born as a son of lower Shirakawa han Samurai. He was raised by his oldest sister Mitsu and her husband after father died.
When he was around 10, he became pupil of Kondo Shusuke's Shieikan dojo of Tennen Rishin Ryu.
One of the famous episode of this Kenjutsu genius is when he was just 12, he defeated a Kenjutsu teacher of Shirakawa han.
Soji became head coach of Shieikan when he was around 19.

1863, he joined Roshigumi along with other Shieikan members.

Shinsengumi
Soji was involved in the assassination of Tonouchi Yoshio and Serizawa Kamo.
On the Ikedaya Affair, he was one of 4 members who raided inside of Ikedaya.
During the 2hours battle, Soji fought on the 2nd floor almost alone but
fell down unconscious because of either Anemia or heat.
(Recent researches deny that this was symptom of tuberculosis)
Many people who witnessed the Shinsengumi in action, described Soji as
one of the best Swordman in the Shinsengumi.
On the other hand,Yagi Tamesaburo told Shimozawa Kan in early Showa period
"Soji was always joking"
"He used to play with neighboring children."

Tuberculosis
Soji became seriously ill in fall of 1867.
He stayed at the Osaka Castle with wounded Kondo Isami during the
Battle of Toba-Fushimi in January 1868.
March, he visited Sato Hikogoro in Hino as a member of Koyo Chinbutai
but had to return to Edo because of his illness.
He died 2 months after Kondo's death.
His grave is in Keisho-ji, Tokyo.
(Keisho-ji allows visitors for Soji's grave only once a year)
"On November 18 (lunar calendar)"
Do we have to mention Lunar calendar everytime when writing dates?--Shikisoku 17:12, 12 January 2007 (PST)

:Since a lot of people get confused, I believe that we do have to mention it's a lunar calendar date whenever possible. Seven 17:16, 12 January 2007 (PST)

I had discussion about this with Kitsuno when writing Timeline.
And conclusion was that this wiki takes Lunar calendar.
So please stop adding (lunar calendar) until Kitsuno decide what to do.--Shikisoku 17:25, 12 January 2007 (PST)

There is no need to add "lunar calendar" because unless otherwise noted, it is understood as lunar calendar. I just have to update the main page to reflect that. The Shinsengumi was a special police force in Kyoto, which was organized by the Bakufu during the Bakumatsu period .

Roshigumi
In 1862, the Bakufu recruited Ronin to guard the Shogun Iemochi on the occasion of a visit to Kyoto.

Boshin War
January 1868 , Boshin war was started with
the Battle of Toba-Fushimi.
When they returned to Edo, Nagakura Shinpachi and Harada Sanosuke
left from Shinsengumi and formed Seikyotai.
Kondo was captured in Nagareyama and executed at Itabashi.
Okita Soji died of Tuberculosis on May 30 (lunar calendar)
.
Hijikata Toshizo was wounded at the Battle of Utsunomiya castle ,
Saito Hajime became commander of Shinsengumi during the Battle of Aizu and he decided to remain with Aizu samurai when Hijikata decided to go to Hakodate.
Hijikata was shot and killed at the Battle of Hakodate and the last Shinsengumi commander Soma Kazue surrendered.

Shieikan
Kondô Isami was born Miyagawa Katsugoro, in the village of Kami-Ishihara in Musashi province, where he came from a farming family. In 1848 Kondô Isami started training in the Tennen Rishin Ryu sword style, at the Shieikan (this ryu was studied by many members of the Shinsengumi). A year later in 1849, he was adopted by Kondô Shûsuke (the third master of the Tennen Rishin Ryu) and changed his name to Shimazaki Katsuta. In 1861 Kondô became the fourth master of Tennen Rishin Ryu.

In 1863, Kondô and another 8 Shieikan members joined the Roshigumi. The Roshigumi arrived at Kyoto on Feb 23, staying at the Yagi Gennojo residence in Mibu.

Shinsengumi
Kiyokawa Hachiro suggested the Roushigumi return to Edo, however, Kondô and 23 other Roushi decided to stay in Kyoto.
They submitted a petition to Lord Matsudaira Katamori of Aizu han, the Military Commissioner of Kyoto and started working under Aizu han as Mibu Roshigumi.

The Mibu Roshigumi were ordered to guard Ohanabatake gate during the Political change on August 18.
After that, they were given the new name Shinsengumi by Katamori (Or Buku Denso).
On September 16, Kondô Isami's group killed Serizawa Kamo's group and Kondô became commander of the Shinsengumi.

In 1864, the Shinsengumi raided the Ikedaya (Ikedaya Jiken) and destroyed the
Sonjo Roshi group.
After the Kinmon rebellion, Kondô went back to Edo to hire more members.
He brought Ito Kashitaro's group to Kyoto.
In 1867 June, Shinsengumi members were appointed to be Jikisan.
In December, Kondô was shot in the right shoulder on the Fushimi street, and was narrowly saved by Shimada Kai.
After the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma, Tatsunosuke deserted from the Shinsengumi but Tetsunosuke stayed.

The Shinsengumi was a special police force in Kyoto, which was organized by the Bakufu during the Bakumatsu period .

Roshigumi
In 1862, the Bakufu recruited Ronin to guard the Shogun Iemochi on the occasion of a visit to Kyoto.

Boshin War
January 1868 , Boshin war was started with
the Battle of Toba-Fushimi.
When they returned to Edo, Nagakura Shinpachi and Harada Sanosuke
left from Shinsengumi and formed Seikyotai.
Kondo was captured in Nagareyama and executed at Itabashi.
Okita Soji died of Tuberculosis just 2 months after Kondo's death.

Mito
The Serizawa family were Gôshi of Seizawa village in Hitachi province.
Serizawa Mistumoto was adopted into the Shimomura family and his name was changed to Shimomura Tsuguji.
Tsuguji was jailed for involvement in the "Tamatsukurigumi" which was a SonnôJôi group in Mito han, however he was released in 1862 and then he changed name to "Serizawa Kamo".

Mibu Rôshigumi
He joined the Rôshigumi in Edo in 1864 and moved to Kyoto.
Yamanami was Ronin from Sendai han who practiced Onoha Itto Ryu (Menkyo) and Hokushin Itto Ryu (Menkyo). In 1860.
He visited Shieikan dojo and had a match with Kondo Isami.
He was defeated and was enrolled at the Tennen Rishin Ryu's Shieikan. In 1863, Kondo and other 8 Shieikan members joined the Roshigumi.

Shinsengumi
Yamanami is believed to have been involved in the assassination of Serizawa Kamo.
1864 January, he captured Futei Roshi at Iwaki Masuya and received prize money from
Lord Matsudaira Katamori of Aizu.
On the Ikedaya Affair, he stayed in the Mibu Roshigumi headquater.

In 1864 October, Ito Kashitaro joined Shinsengumi, he could have been given higher status than Yamanami.

Later in 1864, according to some sources, Yamanami protested Kondo and Hijikata
over moving the headquater to Nishi Hongan-ji.
But Kondo and Hijikata completely ignored him which made him feel isolated.

Death
1865 February 21, Yamanami suddenly ran away from Shinsengumi.
He was captured next day and ordered to commit Seppuku along the Shinsengumi Regulations (Kyokuchu Hatto).
His grave is in Koen-ji, Kyoto.
